My wife Nicole dropped some 💎’s in this #throwback clip! In chapter seven of my book Battle Cry, “Combat Communication,” I share how Nicole and I would only listen in order to respond, instead of intently listening to what our hearts were actually saying. Nicole and I used to have so many emotional triggers that, as soon as one of us was offended by our actions or words, we would pull out the guns of our past and start shooting each other from our unhealed wounds. Our counselor called us “trigger happy,” which the dictionary defines as “recklessly advocating action that can result in war”—or in this case, marital discord. When we changed the way we communicated, our marriage became stronger. #Marriage #WagingWarWithin #MarriageGoals

We are worth more than our work! This may sound obvious, but the world we live in constantly and subconsciously tells us that our work determines our value. As a result, countless good men have driven themselves to early graves. And this culture even has our wives and families temporarily deceived until they’re planning our funerals. Trust me, if you don’t take a break, you will eventually break. #WagingWarWithin Excerpt From Battle Cry

The Most High’s strength is made perfect in our weakness, not in our ability to hide our struggles (1 Cor 12:9).

From early childhood and throughout life, we try to conform to a narrow definition of male essence. Being a male becomes a never-ending struggle to reach perfection, the pinnacle of bravery, fearlessness, and reserve. The battle between your heart (who you really are) and your mind (who you think you should be) intensifies as you struggle to conform. Then you become emotionally imbalanced, mentally unstable—toxic. Comprehensive manhood is the goal. A comprehensive man is courageous but also compassionate, strong but sensitive. A man who lives freely from the good in his heart and not his fears. A comprehensive man embraces all of his emotions so he can express them rather than be ruled by them. #WagingWarWithin #CryLikeAMan

Your deep love for me never wavered — through tests, trials, trauma and triumphs, you’ve remained the same! I just came across this picture and I wanted to share it with the fathers. This moment was captured in front of the old Cave of Adullam building. I would often hit a quick set of elevated pushups before I walked in. As I was finishing my last reps, I hear a few grunts… and I turn to my right. To my surprise, my son had gathered the strength to hold an elevated push-up plank position for at least 10 seconds—something he had never attempted until this day! From the good we do and the bad, always remember, our sons are watching, ready to emulate their “hero.”

This #throwback is a reminder for us to always affirm our children for who they are because the world will tell them who they are not! Fact: The most commonly reported type of bullying is verbal harassment (79%). A type of psychological/mental abuse that involves the use of oral, gestured, and written language directed to a victim — including the act of harassing, labeling, insulting, scolding, rebuking, or excessive yelling towards an individual.

When there’s a lack of good male role models, boys will copy what’s being modeled for them, whether by the men in their lives or by their culture. Popular axioms like “bros before hoes” and “money over b’s, subconsciously programmed us to objectify women and deactivate any emotion that encouraged a genuine love for them. My son Jason and student Elisha wanted to discuss sexual self control, objectification and manipulating women in this episode—and how to change the culture. I receive countless messages through social media from men asking how to win this war within. Almost always, when I tell them to run toward the battle instead of away from it, they get disheartened and our communication goes cold. Let me be real with you, no war is ever won without a fight. On my journey to emotional freedom, I discovered that the hardest part is not breaking free, but staying free—waging and winning the battle inside is a lifetime war! #WagingWarWithin #TheMirror

Yesterday evening when I was walking into a store, a man yells my name and approaches with his right hand extended. As we were shaking hands, he says, “Thank you for what you do because there’s many of days I don’t see a tomorrow.” On the exterior, you see a husband, father and surgeon, but internally like many men, he was mentally on the edge of life, ready to jump. And sadly, those around never see this pain until they are planning our funerals. Thankfully he left encouraged to fight another day and promised he would call my psychotherapist. Men, trust me, I get it but please don’t jump. As I often say, you’re not tired of living, you’re tired of NOT living. So, fight for what you deserve—you are more than a protector and provider—you’re human too.

Men, as we wage and win our wars within, we cannot forget the prisoners of this war! Sometimes you have to return to the source of your hurt, in order to heal. Sankofa (pronounced SAHN-koh-fah), a word in the Twi language of Ghana, means “it is not taboo to fetch what is at risk of being left behind.” I share in Battle Cry, that I had to reach back and free my father so he could express the words I needed to hear that would heal my heart, “I love you son.” If we are willing to open our hearts and minds to the strong possibility that our fathers did not receive affirmation from theirs, we can break the intergenerational trauma cycle for ourselves—and our sons won’t have to struggle the way we did. Dad, Happy Father’s Day—I love you and thank you for allowing yourself to be vulnerable so that I could start healing before you transitioned. #HappyFathersDay #Juneteenth #WagingWarWithin

Sons… it’s crucial that you understand that a good father’s discipline is rooted in love (Heb 12:5-11). Fathers… it’s imperative that we learn how to articulate the root cause of our anger, before our actions become toxic (Eph 6:4). #FatherandSon #FathersDay #WagingWarWithin

As I was pursuing through pictures of The Cave of Adullam documentary premiere and reflecting on winning Best Feature & Best Editing for a documentary at Tribeca—I paused when I saw this picture. I then remembered a time when I was having lunch with a respected social entrepreneur. When I told him how many speaking engagements I turned down a year, he perplexedly asked, “Don’t you want to be successful?” I pulled out my phone and showed him a picture of my family, then said, “I’m already successful.” As I shared in my book Battle Cry, “I’d rather be a private success and a public failure than gain all the accolades this world could offer. I’d rather be affirmed for who I am as a husband and father, than what I do for a living.” #Priority #Family #Husbandhood #Fatherhood

I wanted to post something on Tuesday regarding the red carpet premiere of the Cave of Adullam documentary at Tribeca, but it’s took me sometime to process my thoughts and emotions. Reflecting back when I started developing The Cave of Adullam Transformational Training Academy in 2007 and then seeing the response Monday from the sold out crowd, moved me to tears of joy. The Most High is so faithful to His vision. This documentary will not only change lives but also generations! Thank you to EVERYONE who showed up—especially those who drove across country. It meant the world for me to see your faces and feel your love… THANK YOU! Thank you to Laurence Fishburne, Helen Sugland, Roy Bank, and Wavelength Productions for making it all come to fruition! Thank you Laura Checkoway — you did a phenomenal job directing the documentary! Thank you Greg Harriott, Mike Doyle and Marcelos for shooting and sound. Thank you Whoopi Goldberg for taking time out of your busy schedule to moderate the Q&A and I truly appreciated you whispering words of affirmation to me during the film.
